Excellent Australian GLOBAL HEMP tech INNOVATION.
TCI has developed game-changing technology to make “decorticator machines” that reduce the decortication costs of hemp by a factor of 10X to take advantage of the superior qualities and broad applications of the hemp crop. This is done by avoiding the need for retting, a costly and damagin process. This decorticator enables the hemp crop to be harvested in the morning, then immediately decorticated into fibre and hurd, then degum the fibre at lunchtime, and produce yarn for textile production by the evening of the same day. This is revolutionary. The D8 can decorticate one-two tonnes of hemp stalk per hour.
Starting date of practical use of the innovation: 1999 in the second model of the Decorticator, called the D2. Now the current model is the D8.
Total investments in the innovation: AUD3,500,000
The D8 Decorticator has been patented in a number of countries. It is unique. However, ongoing developments are being protected with non-disclosure agreements, to avoid the risks of patents being accessed and the technology reverse-engineered.
TCI is now poised for immediate and rapid commercialisation of the D8, by selling it at a price of AUD350,000 ex Geelong factory, or by providing decortication services by hiring out the D8 to farmers and cooperatives. The economic value proposition of the D8 is that on-farm decortication enables farmers to generate value on the farm, to increase the value of undecorticated hemp stalk from $100/tonne to $1400/tonne (of fibre and hurd).
TCI's entire journey for 24 years since 1994 when it was founded by Adrian Francis K.Clarke (deceased), has been one of innovation, and it continues to this day.
TCI’s D8 Decorticator enables industrial hemp to take its place in the global economy as a wonderful raw material that enables the production of many products. At present, hemp is a ‘cottage industry’, because the costs of decortication have been too high to make hemp competitive. Now, with the D8, hemp can compete, and its ability to compete will improve agricultural soils globally, reduce chemical usage, improve the biodegradability of a range of products, including hemp plastic, and increase sustainability practices everywhere. TIC considers these benefits to be immense.
