The need for a common European policy on Cannabis

Mr. Stelios Kouloglou, Member of the European Parliament, a Greek activist and a driving force to regulate the Cannabis Law field within the European Parliament and also the voice for Cannabis in front of the European Commission.

Throughout the EU these days there are largely diverse policies and laws regarding cannabis. In some countries you have the choice and freedom to enter coffee shops or cannabis clubs, while in others the use of cannabis may lead even to imprisonment.

If the EU does not come to an agreement on a common legal basis, a historical opportunity may be lost, while its competitors in trade, such as the USA, are getting to know an unprecedented economic growth that leads to billions of dollars in revenue. If the laws and policies in the EU were to change, the agricultural sector of many Mediterranean countries, where the climate is suitable for the cultivation of cannabis, would be resurrected. In addition, drug trafficking, crime rates and money laundering would decrease as a result.

A clear and common legislation of medical cannabis would make things much easier for patients that are in need of it. Currently, such patients are able to buy medical cannabis usually at extremely high prices in legally shady areas, thus preventing them from having access to it when in times of need.

While conservatives and the far right are on the rise, will the EU manage to overcome its archaic mentality and delay?

Stelios Kouloglou (1953) is a member of the European Parliament since 27 January 2015 for "Coalition of the Radical Left", which is aligned with the Confederal Group of the European United Left - Nordic Green Left. Kouloglou is elected on behalf of Greece, with many social issues solutions.

Mr. Kouloglou within EU Parliament, also promotes and manages the regulation of Industrial Hemp and Medical Cannabis Legislative Regulations, which need a number of common moves in the EU.

In his WHC18 presentation MEP Kouloglou, describe a number of legislative proposals to the EU Parliament and explained the reasons for the new cannabis laws in EU and in the Global field.
