European Cannabis Health Investment Project

Ms. Prof. Dr. Tamara Lah Turnšek, from Slovenian National Institute of Biology,

will present at this year's WORLD HEMP CONGRESS 2018, European Cannabis Health Investment Project.

Ms. Tamara T. Lah was born in Ljubljana, Slovenia. She holds a BS in Organic Chemistry, a PhD in Biochemistry , all from the University of Ljubljana.

Prof. Tamara T. Lah has since 1995 been Director of National Institute of Biology, Ljubljana and Head of Department of Genetic Toxicology and Cancer Biology. Since 1999 she is also Assoc. Professor at Biotechnical Faculty of Ljubljana University, teaching Biochemistry of Cancer and giving course for graduate students of Tumour Biology at Medical Faculty programme Biomedicine.

Previously she was Senior Research Associate, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Josef Stefan Institute, Ljubljana, starting her scientific career there from 1980-1994. Her professional career outside Slovenia has included the position of Visiting Research Assistant, Institute of Physiological Chemistry, University of Bonn Germany, (sponsored by fellowship from International Office of the Kernforschungsanlage, Juellich, FRG), 1973; Visiting Research Associate, Department of Biochemistry, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK (sponsored from British Council for research Exchange), 1982-84, where she was working on her PhD Thesis in the field of protein biochemistry. She gained her postdoctoral experiences and becoming an Assistant Professor at Department of Pharmacology, School of Medicine, Wayne State University, Detroit Michigan, USA, 1984-1987; from 1991-1994 she was Visiting Professor and Director of 4Metastasis research Laboratory, Albert Einstein Medical Centre, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.

TOPIC: CANNABIS AND CANCER (pre-clinical research)

National Institute of Biology in Ljubljana has began with pre-clinical research on cancer cells. The aim of the study is to show anti-tumor effects of cannabinoids on cancer cells.

Although cancer is the disease of DNA, cancer research nowadays does not require only the knowledge of molecular biology and medicine, but is approached from a variety of aspects, such as biochemistry, biophysics, physical chemistry, organic chemistry, pharmacology and pharmacy and re the treatment of the disease, also psychiatry, social sciences and even management. However, the development of molecular biology and biochemistry is responsible for understanding the basic mechanisms of the pathophysiological changes during tumour progression and are the source of information for new therapeutical approaches. However, there is long way from the lab bench, not only to the new drug but even to the new diagnostic approaches. The barriers between a new discovery in tumour biology and clinical praxis on one hand, and commercialisation of the product on the other hand will be discussed from the view of a European scientist. A »case study« from Slovenia will be presented to illustrate the situation in recently associated and possibly also in candidate countries. In conclusion, we would expect that EU develops more effective mechanisms for integration of basic and clinical research, which may be achieved during 6FP, and also to influence the R & D networks within European pharmaceutical industry, strengthening their position within global pharmaceutical market.
